Disclaimer:[/u] I don't own Star Wars. It's a shock, I know!!!
Young Anakin Skywalker's heart began to race as the announcers' voices filled the stadium. "Gentlemen, and boy, start your engines!"
Anakin ignited his pod's engine, ignoring the comment meant to annoy him. Everyone was just jealous 'cause he was the only human who could do it. He could win this, he knew he could! Sebulba, his arch-foe, grinned at him evilly, and a bolt of fear coursed through the little boy's veins. He had something planned. Either he had done something, or he was planning to, but neither of those options were good. Sebulba would stop at nothing to win, and maybe that's why he always won.
Podracing was, and still is, considered one of the most dangerous sports throughout the galaxy. Only slightly more safe than open space races. Because, even though the terrain is not a problem, surviving your competitors' wrath is. You must keep a sharp eye on your greedy opponets ... especially Sebulba. The green light appeared with small sound, and they were off!
On Tatooine, there were several podracing routes to take to the end, but only one was far less perilous than all the others. And only Sebulba has mastered the course. So naturally, everyone followed his lead. Accept Anakin Skywalker. he knew Sebulba always took out his first opponet on the first turn (it was too easy) and he did NOT want to be that opponet. He could just see his mother's worried face in his mind.
Shmi Skywalker has been a slave since the age of four, when her family had sold her to Gardola the Hutt. They had needed the money badly, Shmi told her son, and Shmi had pleased the Hutt. Then, at the age of 20, after serving in Gardola's courts for about 17 years, she became pregnant. Shmi had never told Anakin who his father was, so Ani just assumed his father was a fellow slave who had died after Anakin was conceived. When Anakin was 3 weeks old, Gardola lost a bet to Watto, a Toydarian shop owner; betting on "those awful races" (as Shmi called them). Anakin rolled his eyes upon thinking of his mother's distaste for Pod racing. She just didn't understand ... how free it made him feel.
Oops! Back to reality ...
Anakin manuvered out of the way of a substantually large pile of burning metal.
Poor guy. He zoomed ahead. Just in front of him was a narrow trench.
The last time he had raced, he had attmpted to go over it, and was nearly killed by the bounty huntress, Aurra Sing. He rolled his eyes. Into the trench, I go.
He quickly ajusted the pod to squeeze through the narrow opening - and clipped something on the left side of the fragile pod. "Oops!" Anakin's pod was starting to wobble ... and there was a dangerous cave ahead. Ani pushed down on the controls and zoomed overhead. He would possibly lose ground, and probably be shot at - but it was better than wrapping himself and his pod around a stalagmite.
Yup, sure enough, there was Aurra Sing, pointing her weapon of sizeable destruction straight at him. He waved nervously and ducked back into the canyon, laughing at Sing's astonished expression. I guess she doesn't like people seeing her up close, Anakin guessed. Wouldn't blame 'er.
Whoa! He had just come down into second place - on the first lap!
If he held this position for the next two laps, Watto would win his bet, and Anakin would receive 50% of his winnings! "Sweet!" He shouted. Uh-oh, Sebulba heard and looked back. An evil grin came to his face when he saw it was the boy.
He waited for Anakin to come up beside his pod before speaking. "Tell me, bantha fodder, do you like sand?"
"Naw," Anakin shrugged. "It's gritty, annoying ... and it gets everywhere. I'd rather taste victory."
"Too bad, 'cause all you're going to taste for the next week is the gritty, annoying flavor of my dust!" Sebulba's vents flashed, and Anakin's pod caught fire.
"Ahh!" Anakin fought to remain in control, as what was left of his pod plummeted towards the ground. The impact jolted his little body everywhere until the pod's remains finally slowed to a halt. Anakin slammed the hull of the pod with frustration.
Beaten - again! I'll get him next time.
